Star Class Honoring the Past, Leading the Future
Three races completed in ideal Lake Balaton conditions as Austrian duo strengthens grip on overall standings
Balatonföldvár, Hungary – June 4th, 2026 – After the stormy and challenging opening race on Wednesday, the 2026 Star Eastern Hemisphere Championship enjoyed a spectacular second day on Lake Balaton, with sunshine, steady breeze and three races completed for the international fleet.
The 28 teams representing 11 nations were greeted by ideal sailing conditions, with winds ranging from 10 to 15 knots throughout the day. While the first race attempt was abandoned due to a significant wind shift and decreasing breeze, the Race Committee quickly reset the course and successfully completed three races in conditions that could hardly have been better for Star sailing.
The Austrian team of Hans Spitzauer and Christian Nehammer continued their impressive form, winning the first completed race of the day and extending their lead at the top of the leaderboard. Germany's Hubert Merkelbach and Markus Koy claimed victory in the following race, while Croatia's Marin Misura and Tonko Barać took the honors in the final race of the day.
After four races, Spitzauer and Nehammer lead the championship overall, followed by Germany's Daniel Fritz and Jan Eli Gravad in second place. Thanks to their race victory, Merkelbach and Koyhave moved into third overall, while Canada's Ross MacDonald and George Iverson remain within striking distance, tied on points with the German team.
“We had a very demanding day with three races in tricky conditions,” said Hans Spitzauer, who leads the championship with Christian Nehammer. “We managed to win the first race, finished second in the next one, and crossed the line first again in the third before receiving a jury penalty that dropped us to third. Overall, we are very happy with our performance and looking forward to getting back on the water tomorrow.”
For Germany's Hubert Merkelbach, the highlight of the day was claiming victory in one of the afternoon races.
“We spent almost seven hours on the water today, and the conditions kept everyone on their toes,” said Merkelbach. “The racing was very tactical and required constant focus. Together with my crew Markus, we were able to win the second race of the day, which was particularly satisfying because it came after a hard-fought battle on a challenging racecourse.”
Sitting second overall after a remarkably consistent day, Daniel Fritz praised both the racing and the venue.
“We had a very solid and consistent day, which is exactly what you need in a championship like this,” said Fritz. “The conditions were not easy, but our boat speed was good and that helped us recover from a few difficult situations. Lake Balaton really delivered today—from 10 to 12 knots early on to lighter conditions later in the afternoon. It was fantastic racing, and we’re pleased to be sitting second overall after the opening day.”
Friday promises another fascinating chapter in the championship. Forecasts suggest lighter conditions in the morning before the arrival of a new cold front over Lake Balaton. While the first race may be sailed in moderate breeze, the second race of the day could see winds building to 20 knots or more, setting the stage for another demanding test for the fleet.
