San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) is excited to invite members of the International Star Class to compete at the Star World Championship in San Diego, CA with racing from September 8-13, 2024. SDYC has previously been host to the regatta in 2013, 1994, 1973, 1969, 1961, 1958, 1940, and 1938, making 2024 our 9th edition. Co-Chairs Traci Miller and John Burnham and the Star World Championship Committee are committed to making this championship a top-notch experience for sailors and spectators alike.

RACING

The Star is the premier one design racing keelboat in the world. For over 100 years Star sailors have led the way in advancing the sport of competitive sailing.

The Star class was the first in yachting history to hold a world championship annually and continues to attract the best sailors in the world. Star class championship events are hosted at global venues with Olympic and World Champions competing alongside sailors of all ages and skill levels eager to sail at the highest level of the sport.

The Star class has participated in 18 Olympic Games and is known to be the most competitive fleet with highly sought-after titles, boasting over 2,200 members and fleets in 38 countries on 4 continents.

SOCIAL EVENTS

In addition to a week of excellent competition on the water, the Star Worlds at SDYC will feature exceptional hospitality on land. The week will start with a blue blazer Opening Ceremony on Saturday, September 7, followed by a dinner in the Pavilion with classic wooden Star boat Gem on display in the pool. Monday will be designated “Lowell North Day” in the first of three special days honoring just a few of our club’s iconic Star World Champions. Tuesday, September 10, also known as “Malin Burnham Day,” will be celebrated with the Midweek Trophy Dinner on the aircraft carrier Midway, and “Dennis Conner Day” will bring the yacht America and a progressive dinner on property on Thursday, September 12. The final day of racing will conclude with a Friday night Trophy Dinner and cheering for the newest Star World Champion.

There will be a designated Star Lounge for both competitors and guests staffed daily with a Yacht Club volunteer ambassador to answer questions and provide local knowledge. Tickets for the four evening events are available on the Star Worlds and SDYC websites. Keep an eye out for additional information and assistance with planning.
