The boat loaner program started in 2014 under John Chiarella as a vehicle for donors to donate a Star boat to the Class and receive a tax advantage through the US tax code. During this period, approximately 10 boats were donated through John and the program and were loaned to new Star class members for a period of approximately 5 years to get them into the Class. If the sailor actively raced the boat over these years, the boat could be granted to the sailor. While the US tax code has now changed and the advantage to donors is no longer beneficial, the donated boats have been granted to sailors with 1 being retained by the Class. Any funds from sold boats (8408 – no foredeck, no mast) and a mast; were put into the general fund of the Star class. Below is a chart of the boats that have come through the program and their status. The Star Class is still in the position to accept boat donations. Please contact Mike Hecky, Executive Director, or the Star Class office.
